Helmet worn by MG Maurice Rose when he was shot and killed on 30 March 1945. The bullets that struck Gen. Rose’s helmet did not kill him. The helmet flew off his head before he was struck by the third (of four) bursts from a 9mm “Schmeisser” automatic pistol. The first burst hit the general in the right cheek and knocked the helmet off his head. Photo by Jim MacClay (c. 2003). The Museum of Jewish Heritage, NYC.

Wondering if the Germans knew who they were shooting at? Would they have not shot him had they known?
